Thanks to its extensive global network, Bebeka Cooperative can procure a complete range of energy products for its members, from the current fossil fuel products (distillate and residual fuels) to more sustainable alternatives, such as LNG and biofuels.

Residual fuels are heavy products that remain after refining. The fuel oils that are used worldwide in the maritime industry are made up of those residual products. The specifications of a ship's engine determine whether the thickness (i.e. viscosity) of a type of fuel oil is suitable for that specific type of engine. Besides viscosity (and other ISO specifications), the product also has to meet sulphur requirements. This depends on local legislation and regulations aimed at reducing pollution in specific areas. Distillate products are high-quality lighter products created during the oil refining process. The most common distillate product in the maritime industry is marine gasoil DMA containing 0.1% sulphur, also known in the market as gasoil.

In the so-called emission control areas (ECAs) the sulphur content of fuels is limited to a maximum of 0.1% sulphur. Other than these areas a maximum of 0.5% applies worldwide to all marine fuels, unless a vessel is equipped with an exhaust-gas cleaning system (scrubber).

Sustainable alternative fuels produce lower emissions of sulphur, nitrogen and CO2, enabling the maritime sector to achieve its sustainability objectives.
