2015 is going to be an important year, if only because of the changes in the Marpeol Annex VI regulations (IMO) scheduled for that year.
What this means is that within the so-called ECA area, a maximum sulphur level in fuel of 0.1% will apply unless investments are made in costly scrubbers or alternative fuels such as LNG. For our members, this means fuel costs will continue to rise if such investments are not made, e.g. low-sulphur fuels (max 1% sulphur) replaced by a much more expensive marine gasoil.
In addition, Tier 3 regulations will apply for all new engines, which implies even stricter emission rules.
As a consequence, members need to consider their options.
To allow informed decision, we as a co-operative will organise three seminars in 2013 under the working title 'Shipping 2015.' Although the new regulations will not apply before 2015, timely choices need to be made, and so the first seminar will take place in Amsterdam in Autumn 2013. As a service to members, it will be restaged during 2013 and 2014.
Don’t expect yet another exposé on scrubbers or LNG, but rather you can share the experiences of other members in dealing with fuel issues.
The idea is to invite a couple of interesting speakers and invite the representatives/members to discuss and debate alternative strategies, supported by professional moderator.
Invitations to this event which will be held on 9 October 2013 will be issued shortly for the members. More information and early-bird application for members is available by sending an email to management@bebeka.nl
